Remote Trading in Pokémon Go allows you to trade with another player from anywhere across the globe as long as you’re Forever Friends with them.
This long awaited Pokémon Go feature is undergoing a phased rollout starting in New Zealand. This means that, depending on your location, you might not have access to Remote Trading. Don’t worry though – it and Forever Friends, a new Friendship Level, will be with you soon.

Remote Trading explained: How to Remote Trade in Pokémon Go
Remote Trading requires you to become Forever Friends with another player in Pokémon Go. I’ve taken a closer look at Forever Friends in the next section of this guide, so let’s focus on Remote Trades for now.
Let’s start with some good news about Remote Trading. First, if you’re Lucky Friends with another player then your next trade will be Lucky. Yup, you can do Lucky Trades remotely. Secondly, Remote Trades do not count as Special Trades no matter which Pokémon you use. This means you can still conduct a Special Trades in-person every day even if you’ve already technically done one via Remote Trading.
Before you can complete a Remote Trade, you must first mark a selection of Pokémon with the ‘Remote Trade’ tag. These must be Pokémon you’re willing to trade, so choose wisely! After this, you need to either already be Forever Friends with another player and have a Remote Trade ready to go or progress to that Friendship Level with someone.
Remember – you can complete multiple Remote Trades with one player. The catch is that you need to earn 90 Friendship Points with them first! It’s also important to note that Remote Trades do not stack. This means you need to use your Remote Trade opportunity before earning another to ensure you don’t lose it.
When you’re ready to actually do a Remote Trade, you’ll be able to select up to three of your friend’s ‘Remote Trade’ tagged Pokémon. This list will then be sent to the other player and you’ll receive one of your own in return.
From this list, you then select the Pokémon you’re willing to trade. Once your friend has done the same, you’ll be able to review the trade and decide whether you want to confirm or cancel. Both players have the ability to cancel a trade, so be prepared to have your offering turned down. Don’t worry though – you can always go through the process again!

Remote Trading is slowly being released in Pokémon Go! You can get a shiny Keldeo thanks to the Masterwork Research: Pony Tales quest and there’s also the new Precious Paths Special Research quest.
There’s a lot to do in Pokémon Go outside of the current event! First, it’s worth learning about the level update. After this, you might want to fight in the Go Battle League, use Party Play, compete in a PokéStop Showcase or explore a Route for its Gift Exchange. Forever Friends in Pokémon Go explained
Forever Friends is the sixth Friendship Level introduced alongside Remote Trading in Pokémon Go. It comes after the Best Friend level and requires an additional 90 Friendship Points to reach. This means you need a total of 180 Friendship Points to reach the Forever Friends levels with another player.
Friendship Points are the new way you level up your Friendship Level with another player, replacing the previously used ‘Days’. You can earn one Friendship Point per day by interacting with another player. This can come in the form of trading, sending Gifts, raiding together or any other Friendship-related activity. It’s also possible to earn additional Friendship Points by completing a Weekly Challenge.
Upon reaching the Forever Friends level, a progress bar will replace the orange hearts that symbolise your Friendship Level. This progress bar will track how close you are to unlocking another Remote Trade, which requires 90 Friendship Points.
Filling the bar will allow you to perform a Remote Trade and will cause it to reset. This means you’ll automatically start earning Friendship Points towards your next trade straight away. Don’t worry though – you haven’t lost your Remote Trade! You’re simply working towards the next one. Still, it’s a good idea to conduct the Remote Trade before the bar completely refills to avoid losing a trade opportunity.
Here’s a rundown of every bonus you’ll receive upon reaching the Forever Friends level with another player:
- Large reduction in Stardust trading requirements
- Four extra Premier Balls when participating in a raid with your Forever Friend
- Additional attack boost when battling together
- Ability to Remote Trade with your Forever Friend
- Additional Remote Trade opportunities can be earned after the first by collecting 90 extra Friendship Points
