Fined: Uber shared information about its European drivers with its US headquarters over two years

Uber has been hit with a record £246million fine after transferring drivers’ personal data to the US.

The Dutch data protection regulator handed out the penalty after finding the group was in ‘serious violation’ of the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) during the transfer. It is the biggest fine Uber has received globally and the largest dished out by the regulator.

Uber shared information about its European drivers, including ID documents, taxi licences and location data, with its US headquarters over two years, according to the watchdog.

The US company shared the information without using data transfer tools aimed at protecting privacy, which meant the data was ‘insufficiently protected,’ the Dutch authorities claimed.

Uber said it would appeal the ‘unjustified’ fine.

The financial hit comes as EU countries continue to crack down on practices by big tech firms.

Uber has also faced legal battles in the UK over the worker status of its drivers.
