The geologists were fairly certain that the gold was under there; they just needed money to drill more samples. Sacrifices were required. In the case of then junior mining explorer Gold Road Resources, that meant selling 400 head of cattle from the pastoral station that housed the prospect.
Cash from the Yamarna station cattle sale, about 1000 kilometres north-east of Perth, kept Gold Road’s drills revolving. Big investors soon caught wind of a massive find. The prospect was given the cheesy moniker of Gruyere, and in late 2013 it was recognised as one of the country’s best undeveloped gold mines.
