Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac have welcomed new minority investors on board at Wrexham to fast-track their plans for the Championship club to reach the Premier League
Everything we know about Wrexham’s new minority investors
- Apollo Sports Capital (ASC) has acquired a minority stake in Wrexham to finance the Championship club’s growth, including the redevelopment of its home stadium. The investment is aimed at providing long-term funding to push ahead with transforming the Racecourse Ground, specifically the construction of a new Kop stand, while Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac remain the controlling majority owners.
- ASC is the dedicated sports investment platform of Apollo Global Management, one of the world’s largest alternative asset managers. The move links the club to an investment vehicle which is said to be worth up to $5billion (£3.75bn).
- The parent company has already provided significant financial backing to a prominent English club in the form of debt financing. Apollo Global Management previously supplied an £80m loan to Premier League side Nottingham Forest, secured against the club’s stadium.
- ASC is also poised to acquire a controlling majority stake in Spanish giants Atlético Madrid. According to reports, they are expected to acquire a stake of between 51 to 55 per cent in the La Liga club, with the transaction set to be completed in the first quarter of 2026.
- The platform is led by seasoned sports executive Al Tylis, whom the Wrexham co-chairmen know personally. The existing relationship with Tylis stems from the involvement of both parties investing in Mexican Liga MX side Club Necaxa.
- Apollo’s managed funds have already deployed tens of billions of dollars across the broader sports and entertainment industry. Their portfolio extends beyond football, with previous investments spanning stadium and league financings, media rights, and stakes in major global events like the Mutua Madrid Open tennis tournament.
- The partnership with Wrexham is designed to ensure the club’s growth remains sustainable while contributing to the local economy. Reynolds and Mac said the investment aligns with their mission to secure promotion to the Premier League and support the wider Wrexham Gateway regeneration scheme.
