The first wrapped in 2021 with five seasons but the announcement of the new season has left viewers undecided
Just when viewers through the doors to the Royal Mint and the Bank of Spain had closed forever, Netflix has revealed that the world of Money Heist is far from over. The streaming giant has teased a new expansion of the hugely successful Spanish crime franchise, sparking excitement and concern among loyal viewers who believed the show had already reached the perfect conclusion.
Originally released under its Spanish title La Casa de Papel, the series became a worldwide phenomenon after landing on Netflix in 2017. Led by the calculating Professor, played by Alvaro Morte, the series followed a team of highly skilled robbers carrying out elaborate heists while constantly staying one step ahead of the authorities.
Narrated by Tokyo, portrayed by Ursula Corbero, the show built a huge global fanbase across five seasons before ending in 2021 with an explosive finale that appeared to wrap up the gang’s story once and for all.
Since then, Netflix has already expanded the franchise with Berlin, the prequel centred on Pedro Alonso’s charismatic thief. However, now the streaming giant has hinted that even more stories surrounding Money Heist are set for the future.
In a statement teasing future projects for the series, Netflix said: “Some stories start with the perfect strike. And this one changed everything.
“From the first heist for cash to the most artful robbery of the century, including the assault that put tons of gold from the Bank of Spain on the line, the universe of ‘Money Heist’ has never stopped growing, evolving and surprising us.
“But if there’s one thing that’s clear, it’s that the revolution NEVER ends. From now on, this is mission control for everything in the ‘Money Heist’ universe.
“If you want in on the next plan and don’t want to miss a single move from the gang, this is the place to be. The world of ‘Money Heist’ continues on Netflix.”
Despite the excitement surrounding the announcement, many longtime fans have questioned whether revisiting the series is really necessary. Taking to social media, viewers have debated whether the franchise risks losing what made it special by continuing the story beyond its original ending.
One fan posed the question of Reddit, as they penned: “La Casa de Papel was already going downhill prior to the last season. I enjoyed it but it felt unnecessary. I guess that here we are again? I don’t think it’s needed at all.
“Seems as if that universe has already played out as needed, time to just let it die and develop a new franchise as opposed to beating it to death.”
To which one viewer replied, sharing their concerns as they wrote: “I think some shows need to end.. why stretch them?”
However, others took to the comments to argue that there is still time left for the series, particularly after the positive reaction to the spin off series Berlin. “They had a spinoff, Berlin, that wasn’t bad so why not? We could all use a little more Bella Ciao,” one user wrote.
Another added: “I don’t mind seeing another Money Heist, only because I like this type of movie, though I do realise that too many follow-on seasons don’t always turn out well.”
Netflix has not yet revealed whether the next instalment will be a sixth season, another spin-off or an entirely new story set in the same universe.
