From frozen credit cards to fridge Feng Shui, there are some strange money-saving hacks going viral at the moment
There is no doubt about it, Brits appreciate a good money-saving hack. From bargain aisles in clothes shops to the yellow sticker reduction section in our supermarkets, if we can’t save a big of cash, we’ll give anything a go.
However, it turns out that people on Reddit, the social media platform that hosts discussion forums for different topics, have taken frugality to the next level, and they have shared their most creative methods to cut costs.
As a result, coupon experts at Voucherbox have analysed some of the most unique tips shared in Reddit threads to reveal the most unusual ways people are saving money.
“These Reddit users prove that sometimes a little creativity can go a long way in cutting costs,” Charlotte Lumbroso-Baumgartner, CEO of Voucherbox added.
“Small changes add up over time and finding the right money-saving strategy that works for you is important to help you reach your financial goals faster.”
Frozen credit card trick
We’re starting off strong with possibly one of the strangest strategies we’ve heard of regarding cutting costs.
One Redditor claims to keep their credit card quite literally frozen in a block of ice in their freezer.
Why? They claim it forces them to reflect on purchases as they physically have to wait for the ice to thaw before making any impulse online transactions.
Mobile games
Another commenter shared that playing mobile games helped them become better at saving money.
Since many games require players to stack up and save points, this skill carried over to the Redditor’s everyday routine, leading to more self-disciplined spending in real life.
‘Squirrel Method’
Inspired by squirrels hiding their nuts for later, one Redditor recommends stashing money across various accounts that are not used for daily expenses.
By spreading their savings across multiple accounts, the Redditor claims to avoid the temptation to spend.
Quitting social media
It sounds easier than it is, especially for the younger generation, but a surprising tip came from a user who claimed that quitting social media helped them save money.
Without the constant exposure to influencers and luxury lifestyles, they no longer felt pressured to spend money to keep up with others.
Organising your fridge
Another clever tip is to arrange food in your fridge based on expiration dates.
By placing items that are going out of date first at the front of the fridge and those with a longer shelf life at the back, one Redditor claims they have greatly reduced their food waste and saved money as a result.
