Revolut has announced the launch of mobile phone plans for the first time, in a move it hopes will challenge traditional network providers.
The fintech company is rolling out the plans in the UK and Germany first, with an introductory rate of £12.50 a month for unlimited calls, texts, domestic data and a 20GB EU and US roaming allowance – with no fixed contract.
Revolut users will also be able to pay for their plan with their RevPoints, the company’s loyalty scheme.
“In our view, consumers are suffering with traditional network offerings due to a lack of transparency with hidden fees, painful customer experience and old, difficult to navigate UX. We’re looking to solve all three,” says Hadi Nasrallah, retail director at Revolut.
A bold pitch – but how does it stand up to scrutiny?
Two key selling points
Tom Lyon, director at Compare the Market, says the plan “looks like a very strong offer”, particularly for frequent travellers.
“The inclusion of 20GB of roaming data across both the EU and US stands out, as many providers still exclude US roaming at this price point.
“The lack of a fixed contract also adds flexibility, making it an attractive option for people looking for both value and freedom.”
But Lyon adds: “That said, it’s always worth shopping around; with a wide range of phone and data packages now available, the right deal for you will depend on your usage habits, need for roaming, and whether you want extra perks like streaming or tech support included.”
Rivals offering good value
Ernest Doku, Uswitch mobiles expert, said Revolut’s loyalty scheme, which rewards customers with points on purchases, could help make the plans more affordable.
But there are other SIM-only providers with comparable offerings at a similar price point.
iD Mobile offers unlimited data starting from £15 a month (with 30GB of free roaming across Europe), while Lebara offers unlimited data at £9.98 for the first three months.
“Comparatively, Three Mobile, which offers 12GB of roaming across both Europe and the US, stands at £31.50 per month,” he says.
Doku concludes that Revolut is worth considering, although: “While it remains to be seen how long Revolut’s introductory pricing will last, it could be worth considering joining the waitlist, especially if you’ll make use of the Europe and US roaming allowances.”
