More than half of Scots have admitted to losing sleep over money worries due to the cost of living, a poll has found on the eve of the general election.
Food prices and energy bills have rocketed in recent years as the UK economy struggled under a Tory Government at Westminster.
Rampant inflation has also eroded the earning power of workers and pushed the cost of everyday staples ever higher.
A poll by Survation for 38 Degrees, a non-profit political campaigning group, found 53 per cent of UK voters had been kept awake at night by money worries on numerous occasions over the last two years.
The figure was highest in Glasgow North East, where 55 per cent of respondents admitted to sleeplessness over financial concerns.
Matthew McGregor, CEO of 38 Degrees, said: “There’s just one night to go before Scotland heads to the ballot box. But while pundits pour over polls to try to predict who’ll come out on top in which seat, this poll has a much more important message.
“On the night before the general election, millions of people will be lying awake, worried about their financial future. They’ll be looking to the next Government for a solution – and they deserve to get one.
“Whoever our next Prime Minister is, whoever is elected throughout Scotland, their first thought must be for the millions of people who have been left in such dire financial straits that they’re losing sleep, worrying about how they’re going to feed their kids or keep the roof over their heads.
“On July 5, every new MP should make their first priority tackling this cost of living crisis, making real change, so that we can all stop worrying about getting by, and get back to being able to live a little.”
