The Australian sharemarket will open higher on Monday as apprehensive investors hope that signs of an impending budget deal in Washington will end a lengthy government shutdown that has left traders with little data to track the health of the US economy.
But strategists say a reversal of the upbeat commentary from lawmakers in the United States – that a breakthrough to end a 40-day shutdown is near – will punish stocks after two consecutive weeks of losses on the ASX.
