The Australian sharemarket will open higher on Monday as apprehensive investors hope signs of an impending budget deal in Washington ends a lengthy government shutdown that has left traders with little data to track the health of the economy.

But strategists say a reversal of the upbeat commentary from lawmakers in the United States – that a breakthrough to end a 40-day shutdown – will punish stocks after two consecutive weeks of losses on the ASX.
