The top finance officials of Japan and the United States have reaffirmed that the two countries will continue their close cooperation.

Japanese Finance Minister Katayama Satsuki met US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent for the first time on Monday. Bessent is accompanying President Donald Trump on his visit to Japan. The meeting lasted for about an hour.

Katayama later told reporters the two had agreed the importance of maintaining close bilateral ties will not change under the administration of Japan’s new leader, Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae.

She added that she had briefed Bessent on the new Cabinet’s intention to pursue fiscal and economic management in a responsible manner.

The minister said she also thanked Bessent for his leadership in guiding the Japan-US trade negotiations over tariffs to an agreement.
