Old age, er. Such fun, no really it is. It does cost you, and you have to suffer aches and pains, bits packing up, the hell when putting your socks and shoes on. But come on, everyone should grow old. It’s part of life’s experience. Just think of the alternative.

When I got to 80 I started boasting all the time: “Don’t you know how old I am?”

First thing each morning I read the birthdays column in The Times, to see how many of those mentioned I have met along the way. Then I read the obits, checking out the ages to see how many were younger than me. Ha-ha, I’m the winner. Which of course I should not do, very bad taste, considering
