President Donald Trump threatened to withhold federal money from New York City if democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani (D) wins the mayoral race.
Monday morning’s threat comes in the wake of incumbent Mayor Eric Adams‘s (D) announcement he’s dropping out of the race. Mamdani, who’s the frontrunner with 45 percent support among likely voters, is facing off against former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa in the general election.
“Self proclaimed New York City Communist, Zohran Mamdani, who is running for Mayor, will prove to be one of the best things to ever happen to our great Republican Party,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
“He is going to have problems with Washington like no Mayor in the history of our once great City. Remember, he needs the money from me, as President, in order to fulfill all of his FAKE Communist promises. He won’t be getting any of it, so what’s the point of voting for him? This ideology has failed, always, for thousands of years. It will fail again, and that’s guaranteed!” Trump wrote.
Trump has made no secret of his aversion to Mamdani’s candidacy, repeatedly referring to him as a “communist.”
After the embattled Adams dropped out, Mamdani told New York’s ABC7, “Donald Trump will do what Donald Trump wants to do, but the important thing is to understand why he’s so interested,”
“He ran a campaign speaking about cheaper groceries and a lower cost of living. That’s the campaign that we ran. The difference is that he has shown no interest in delivering on that agenda, instead just persecuting his supposed political enemies. Our campaign is sincere in these commitments, and that’s what scares him,” he continued.
Far from supporting Sliwa, the Republican nominee, Trump called him “not exactly prime time,” in a recent interview. Some political pundits believe Trump is secretly backing former foe Cuomo, who currently has 23 percent of support from likely voters.
