There has only been two away wins this century and both came for the Europeans in 2004 and 2012 respectively.

Luke Donald‘s men lifted the trophy last time in Rome but a changed US team led by new captain Keegan Bradley are out to stop them.

What is the prize money of the Ryder Cup 2025?

There is NO prize money for winning the Ryder Cup.

Traditionally, players are not paid for their efforts at the biannual event.

The Europeans will not be taking home a cheque as usual – but US stars will in a controversial change.

The PGA of America have announced that they will give their 12-man team $500,000 (£395,000) each, with $300,000 (£237,000) going to a charity or charities of the player’s choice.

The remaining $200,000 (£158,000) has been labelled a “stipend”, which is essentially a wage.

A statement from the PGA of America said that no player demanded payment.

Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy previously voiced his displeasure at the move, saying: “I personally would pay for the privilege to play in the Ryder Cup.

“I have come a long way in this, especially with the Olympics, but the two purest forms of competition in our game right now are the Ryder Cup and Olympics, partly because of the purity of no money being involved.”

Ryder Cup 2023 “Hatgate” controversy

When Europe lifted the trophy two years ago in Italy, an alleged protest by US ace Patrick Cantlay sparked controversy.

He was supposedly unhappy about not getting paid and refused to wear the team’s cap to make a stand.

Cantlay shut down the rumours and said the hats were too small for his head.

But it did not prevent the Europeans taunting him by waving their hats at him constantly.

This all led to a furious row between McIlroy and Cantlay’s caddie Joe LaCava in the car park.

The Ryder Cup is back THIS WEEK as Team Europe hope to defend their crown on American soil

Luke Donald‘s team has travelled to New York ahead of the big start on Friday.

Europe has dominated the prestigious competition in the 21st century, winning eight of the 11 meetings since 2002.

But only two of those wins have come in the United States, with Team USA winning both the 2021 and 2016 competitions.

In fact, Team Europe has only won one of the four Ryder Cups held in the US – 2012 – since their win there in 2004 and Team USA enter as the odds-on bookies’ favourites.
