It is advisable to have a clear understanding of your motor insurance cover before travelling abroad. Photo: Getty

Q I have just booked a camping holiday in France this summer. We will be travelling by ferry, so we can take our car. I have heard that if we are involved in an accident in France, our car insurance wouldn’t provide us with a replacement vehicle if we needed one, even though we have a comprehensive car insurance policy which provides cover for a replacement vehicle if we were in an accident at home. Is this correct?

A Comprehensive insurance offers cover for a replacement vehicle in the event of an accident at home, but that usually only applies within Ireland.
