Nashik: A 36-year-old software engineer lost Rs 36 lakh in the online share market scam. On the complaint of the victim, the cyber police station registered a case under Section 420 (cheating) of the IPC and other sections of the Information Technology Act. The police said that the engineer, a resident of Hirawadi, Panchavati, was contacted by three people from time to time between March 19 and May 15. The conmen contacted the complainant through Whatsapp and added him in a special Whatsapp group. The conmen then convinced the victim to enter share investment so that he can get very good returns. Subsequently, they asked him to purchase and trade shares through a fraudulent trading application. The concerned person invested over Rs 36 lakh in two months and realized that while he was investing the money and earning profits, he was not able to withdraw the money. Realizing that he was cheated, the victim registered a complaint with the cyber police on Sunday. In Dec 2023, the police booked nine, including an official of the goods and services tax department, for cheating investors by promising big returns. Five of the nine people were arrested.
