The PGA Tour arrives in the Motor City tomorrow for the Rocket Mortgage Classic and I’ve picked out a trio of players who should appreciate the challenge at Detroit Golf Club this week, and can earn themselves a top-20 finish in the process.
2 pts Cam Davis Top 20 @ 14/5
First up is Cam Davis. Though the Aussie’s form figures don’t appear the most inspiring, he turned up here in 2021 in similar form and went on to win the event for his first PGA Tour title. Recording two further top-20s in the next two years, the course clearly suits and while his recent performances were enough to guide me elsewhere in terms of the search for an outright winner this week, I’d be surprised if he wasn’t occupying a spot near the top of the leaderboard by Sunday evening.
Davis began the year solidly and had a strong run of form from Pebble Beach at the start of February to The Masters in April; gathering four top-20s across six starts, including a 12th-place finish at Augusta.
His results over his last seven starts don’t match up to that, but it must be noted that across those starts he’s played two majors and four Signature Events. He should appreciate this weaker field and after starting well in the Travelers Championship last week with a 65, the game is clearly not too far away.
Davis missed his first two cuts in Detroit prior to that 2021 win but following with finishes of 14th in 2022 and 17th last year – recording 11 out of 12 rounds in the 60s in his last three starts – he has clearly got the hang of the course. He can demonstrate so again this week by securing a fourth straight top-20 finish here.
2 pts Daniel Berger Top 20 @ 3/1
Daniel Berger has made steady progress since returning from a back injury at the start of this year, and after an impressive tee-to-green display last time out in the US Open, this class act looks a decent price for a top-20 finish.
Berger showed positive signs right at the beginning of the year, with 39th and 28th-place finishes in the Farmers Insurance Open and Phoenix Open respectively. His form tailed off a touch thereafter but he has been producing his best golf of the year over his last five starts.
He’s only missed one cut over those starts – in the Canadian Open – and recorded a first top-20 of the year in the CJ CUP Byron Nelson, finishing 13th. However, it’s his performance at Pinehurst two weeks ago that really stands out.
Berger finished 21st there after finishing his week with a 1-under 69 in round four. He was one of the best players in the field tee-to-green, ranking 6th, which was most prominently engineered by his approach play, ranking 5th.
He has in fact hit it well for most of the year, ranking 11th on the PGA Tour in greens-in-regulation, 14th in approach and 32nd off-the-tee. Though the short game, especially the putter, has been letting him down.
It is those battles on the greens that warned me off backing Berger outright this week, as you’re going to have to make your fair share of putts in this typically low-scoring affair. Having said that, it’s hard to ignore a player of this quality when he is hitting the ball so well and whilst I don’t think he’ll quite hole enough on the greens to go and win this week, I’m sure his high-class long game can take him to a top-20 finish.
1 pts Henrik Norlander An Top 20 @ 8/1
Henrik Norlander has been having a consistent, solid year to date and with some eye-catching course and comp course form, he looks an attractive price to hit the top-20 this week.
Norlander made his first start of the year on the Korn Ferry Tour, finishing 20th in Colombia and improved further on this on his first two PGA Tour starts, finishing top-15 in both the Mexico and Puerto Rico Open. He recorded his third PGA Tour top-20 in just seven starts, four starts ago in the Myrtle Beach Classic and has taken advantage of the special FedExCup category on the DP World Tour recently, coming into this week after finishing 21st in last week’s KLM Open in the Netherlands.
He was among the best iron players in the field there, ranking 6th and also looked strong on the greens. Indeed, it’s these areas that have shone most for him throughout his pro career, particularly his irons, and it’s a combination that should work very well at Detroit Golf Club.
Norlander transferred that biggest strength to this course on debut in 2020, with a field-leading approach display helping him towards a 12th-place finish. He’s since played a further three times, making the weekend on each occasion and with a strong record in the Sanderson Farms Championship – having recorded finishes of 2nd, 4th, and 4th – he has some excellent comp form that strengthens my belief that this course is a good fit for him.
